Personally, I find Google’s search results to be almost completely useless except for the narrow case of the obvious major commercial who’s domain name I just can’t remember because it’s non-obvious. Everything else is overrun with what I consider spam or overly commercial links. And I don’t think I have ever (maybe once or twice in a decade?) clicked on a sponsored link. Is the whole Google empire built on spam? Who clicks on those links and buys that stuff? Is it the same people buying the viagra from all the email spam? Is the whole internet economy built on the backs of the same few dumb suckers? Really? What am I missing? Or am I just that elitist?
Anyway, there is also a Google public perception problem. Because I am now not the only one who thinks this. There are others. I like this one. Might makes right | John August
And of course, Google’s reaction is the classic giant evil megacorp head-in-the-sand it’s the customer’s fault you don’t understand.
My opinion of course is that this is what happens with big companies (and small). The tone comes from the top. Larry and Sergey think humans don’t matter. Everything can be solved through algorithm. Customers are algorithms. Their opinions don’t matter. The data shows that there is no spam problem. Therefore there is no spam problem. End of story. Now if we could just figure out what that damn Facebook thing is…
